WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO TREAT OUTDOOR SPACE AS PART OF EVERYDAY LIVING RATHER THAN LEFTOVER SPACE?

  • Working in Santa Monica requires navigating a dense set of regulations and review processes. The constraints are significant, and decisions made early in the project can have lasting implications on feasibility, sequencing, and outcomes. This demanded a careful and rational approach to planning, rather than reactive adjustments later in the process.

At the same time, the client took on the role of general contractor and held an exceptionally high standard for craftsmanship and detail. The level of precision pursued during construction required drawings and decisions that were clear, coordinated, and buildable. The challenge was to align regulatory compliance, design intent, and execution quality without allowing any single aspect to overwhelm the overall clarity of the project.

  • The main challenge was integrating a design that is modern yet traditional, fitting the community's vibe while maintaining its uniqueness and connection to the nearby LA River. We aimed to create a home that satisfies the contemporary lifestyle while reflecting Los Angeles' historical essence and providing outdoor connections to the parks and bike/walking paths surrounding the LA River.

  • Our role was to provide architectural structure and direction throughout the process. By framing the main house and the ADU as parts of a single, integrated environment, decisions about circulation, outdoor space, privacy, and phasing could be addressed cohesively rather than in isolation.

Through disciplined planning and a rational response to regulatory constraints, the project moved forward with consistency and control. The result is a residential composition where indoor and outdoor spaces work together naturally, supporting daily life while remaining adaptable to future needs. It is a home environment shaped not by excess, but by clarity, intention, and long-term thinking.
