Nestled atop Los Angeles’ Hollywood Hills, the Hall Residence is a modern single-family residence. The client’s goals combine a small, yet flexible interior space that utilizes the unique outdoor climate of Southern California. Programming objectives include: three bedrooms, two-and-a-half bathrooms, pool, living/dining room, kitchen, office, and double-car garage.
The project is inspired by the industrial character of Southern California’s sea ports. By utilizing cargo shipping containers, we worked closely with the client to develop a design that showcased sustainable building principles, while highlighting a clean, modern aesthetic for the home.
The design creates relationships between architectural scale and adaptive reuse of shipping containers. In effect, the combination of these elements allows a reworking of challenging site conditions into a balanced, harmonious building. By creating terraced spaces, the steep hillside topography provides a balance that minimizes site excavation and costly earthwork compaction.
